Why WOOL?

To coincide with this year’s Wool Week I thought I would share with you the reasons why I choose to make my Speckle woven blankets and scarf collections out of 100% merino lambswool, and it’s not just not all about how soft and cosy it makes you feel.

Growing up in Wales with our history of the Welsh woollen blanket, a home item that is treasured, collected and passed on through the family, I wanted to create textile pieces that were beautifully made and would become, with time, family heirlooms.

Wool is truly an amazing fibre.  As a natural material it has a list of credentials that makes it a smart material. For starters it has the qualities of being both breathable, micro-climatic and offers insulation to boot.  All these qualities mean that as a fibre it can keep you warm when you want to be cosy on the sofa but also allows you to cool down when you become hot.  This makes it perfect for locations where the weather can be interchangeable and also perfect as a fibre that is to sit next to your skin.

Wool is a green material. It is both renewable and biodegradable.  By making our textile products out of wool we are not adding to the ever worrying problem of plastic pollution particularly within our oceans where the issue of micro plastics from the synthetic garment industry is only now being understood.  Wool is also anti-static and odour resistant which means that it doesn’t naturally gather dust and odours and therefore doesn’t require continuous washing like synthetic fibres.

When made with care, items created out of wool offer a lifetime of comfort and joy.
